Phenylketonurics

by Jeff Paulson

Phenylketonurics, who are you?
Your abbreviation is PKU.

You have a rare inherited metabolic disease,
And we number one in twenty thousand, you and me.

When we were small we ate no meat or fish,
But as many fruits and veggies as we wished.

We limited our proteins to within our own range,
And some people thought what we did eat was strange.

Our formula we lovingly called "Pheny",
But it's smell was obnoxious and "nrms" didn't want any.

We flavored it with things like Strawberry Quik,
And this "Pheny" played a big part in our lives so we did not get sick.

With diet we grew to normal size,
And had as good a chance as any to become healthy and wise.

Next time you see "Phenylketonurics" on a bottle or can,
You may remember this poem, and the fact that I am.
